FOC deals with state cuts, taxes

HAMMONTON—The town’s Fiscal Oversight Committee (FOC) continued to deal with a variety of cuts and taxes being issued by the state government during this budget season, including a possible increase in the garbage tax from 60 cents to three dollars a ton. Discussion of the decreases in state aid, increases in taxes and the possible effects of Governor Jon Corzine’s push for consolidation of government services came during the meeting of the FOC on March 10.

School budget increases 12.6%

HAMMONTON—A closer examination of the school budget figures shows that the budget grew substantially from the 2007-2008 budget voters passed in April of 2007 to the 2008-2009 budget sent to the county earlier this month.

HAMMONTON—The town came together last week to mark the passing of Jenny Schenk, 83, a lifelong volunteer who dedicated her life to the community and a host of local causes and institutions. Schenk died on March 3. Hundreds attended her viewing at the Marinella Funeral Home and memorial services at the Hammonton Presbyterian Church, honoring her life of community service and remembering her fondly.
Commission pays homage to tree

Joanna Conn, subcommittee chairwoman of Hammonton Environmental Commission, Specimen Tree Project, has selected a European purple beech tree on the property of Michael and Julie Condie, 431 Peach Street in Hammonton, as the most magnificent tree in town. A plaque was placed on the tree on March 8. It measures 4 feet 7 inches in diameter and is estimated to be more than 150 years old.
