HHS Wrestling Surging

HAMMONTON—Five Hammonton High School wrestlers had pins as the Blue Devils edged Cape Atlantic League rival Absegami 36-33 last week.


Justin Flood (106), Shane Way (113), Logan Walters (120), Luca Giagunto (126) and Michael Maimone (150) all won by fall for the Blue Devils.


Flood pinned Absegami’s Liam Kisby, Way took down Nick Gargione and Walters followed with another pin for Hammonton. Giagunto took down Andrew Sears and later in the meet, Maimone pinned Johnny Font.


Other winners for Hammonton were Frank Italiano, who defeated Matthew Sterling 4-2 in a tiebreaker at 138 pounds and Serhii Chuhui, who won a tiebreaker at 285, defeating Jose Amaro 2-1.


Last weekend, Hammonton earned three victories and lost a decision at Highland Regional.

The Blue Devils downed Cedar Creek, Audubon and St. Joseph Academy, while losing to the host Tartans.


Hammonton won all but one match against St. Joe, with Flood (106), Way (113), Walters (120), Giagunto (126), Vincenzo Cirillo (132), Maimone (150), Edward Niedoba (175), Michael Ryan (190) and Camryn Broadnax (285) picking up forfeit wins.


On the mat, Italiano pinned Doug Farinaccio at 138 and at 144, Brett Stansbury took down Colin Steiner. Kevin Watson pinned David Goodwin at 165 and Mark Hartley pinned Gavin Steiner at 215 pounds.


The Blue Devils also cruised past Cedar Creek 69-6.


Flood (106), Way (113), Walters (120) and Hartley (215) had pins, while Giagunto (126), Cirillo (132), Stansbury (138), Benedetto (157), Watson (165), Niedoba (175) and Ryan (190) had forfeit wins.


The other two decisions were much closer, as Hammonton edged Audubon 31-27 and lost to Highland 36-32.


Opening at 165 pounds against Audubon, Watson put the Blue Devils on the board first when he pinned Gabriel McCracken in 1:14. Niedoba followed with a pin in 3:06 against Christian Burton at 175, but Audubon won at 190, 215, 285 and 106 to take an 18-12 lead.


After Way collected a forfeit at 113, Audubon won a decision at 120. Giagunto scored a 14-4 major decision at 126 to put the Devils ahead 22-21.


Audubon went back in front with a major decision at 132, and Stansbury knotted the score 25-25 when he topped John Scoleri 9-2 at 138 pounds. Italiano’s 9-4 win at 144 gave Hammonton a 28-25 lead and at 150 Maimone edged Pedro Marte to give the Blue Devils a six-point lead. Audubon won at 157 to close the match but could not come back for the win.

Highland scored a 36-32 win against Hammonton.


Flood pinned Chase McLernon at 106 pounds, Way took down Aidan Slimm at 113 and at 126, Giagunto scored a 24-7 technical fall against Gavin Simonelli.


At 138, Italiano pinned Michael Simonelli and at 157, Benedetto topped Mikey Giancaterino 4-0. Ryan won at 190, grabbing a forfeit victory.


Earlier this week, Hammonton faced Schalick and Millville, but those results were too late for this edition.


On February 4, the Blue Devils will wrestle at a quad meet hosted by Washington Twp. that also includes St. Joseph and Lindenwold.
