William Franklyn Oberempt Jr.

William Franklyn (Obie) Oberempt Jr. died peacefully on Thursday, January 7, 2021.

Bill was born in 1937 to Muriel (Witham) and William Oberempt, in West Haven, Conn. Right after high school graduation in 1955, Bill’s patriotic love of country and strong sense of duty led him to volunteer to serve in the U.S. Navy. In 1960, he met and married Eleanor McCauley (now deceased). The couple had three children during Bill’s Navy Service. Because of the necessary military requirements of constant absences from wife and children, Bill decided, with great regret, to honorably leave the Navy in 1966.

His Navy storekeeper rate led him into a new civilian career, working for Sears, Roebuck & Co. for nine years. He became a Sears department manager in Vineland, N.J. In 1970, Bill and Eleanor welcomed their fourth child, a son. In 1975, when he left Sears, his strong sense of law and order led him to become a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Officer. In 1981, he joined the new casino industry in Atlantic City, as a gaming surveillance officer at the Claridge Casino until his retirement in 2006.

His is predeceased by his oldest son, William III.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Kay; his children, John (Lori); Robin Wilton; Mark (Mary Ann); Brothers Gordon (Judith) and Arthur (Judy) Oberempt and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
