HHS volleyball opens with two wins

HHS Volleyball off to solid start

HAMMONTON—Strong play at the end of each game allowed Hammonton High School’s boys volleyball team to notch its second victory of the season on April 5, as the Blue Devils swept Mainland 2-0.

“We played well today,” Hammonton coach Brian Reed said.

“We were able to close strong and come out with a win. They [Mainland] are pretty good for a first-year program. They gave us a good match,” Reed said.

Both games went back-and forth, with Hammonton closing the opener with three-straight points to post a 25-18 win. In the second, the Blue Devils missed on their first match point attempt, and eventually went on to win 27-25 to clinch the victory.

Isaac Fishman had six kills, eight assists and an ace for Hammonton, while Joe Tierno recorded 10 assists along with four kills and a pair of service points for the Blue Devils. Gio Reyes had four kills and Matt Viruet had two aces.

Reed was pleased with the win and how his team executed on the court.

“It was nice to see us take some of the things we’ve worked on in practice and put them to work in a match. That shows how we’re improving. It’s a process, but we’re making some good progress,” He said.

The victory came a few days after Hammonton won its season opener at Cedar Creek, 2-0, on April 3.

In that match, Hammonton won the opening game 25-21 and the second, 25-17.

Tierno had three kills and eight assists, Fishman recorded seven kills, two blocks, seven assists and five service points and Reyes had eight digs and four kills in the win.

Hammonton hosted Collingswood on April 8, but that game ended too late for this edition. On April 12, the Blue Devils host Camden Tech at 5:15 p.m.
