Lacrosse teams eager to start first campaigns at HHS

Lacrosse debuts at Hammonton High School

HAMMONTON—Hammonton High School will introduce a pair of new teams this spring, as both girls and boys lacrosse teams will begin their inaugural seasons.

For the 2024 season, both will be club teams, meaning they will not play as official varsity programs and will not be able to compete for Cape Atlantic League or South Jersey sectional titles.

“It’s exciting. Lacrosse is growing across South Jersey and now we have it here,” Hammonton athletics director Chris Sacco said.

As for playing at the club level, Sacco said that will help Hammonton’s programs develop more quickly.

“We really have no experience with lacrosse. There are a few kids who have played, but many are new to the sport, so to throw them into a varsity situation wouldn’t be fair to them,” Sacco said.

Dave Thompson, an assistant coach with the boys team agreed.

“We’re not ready to compete at that level,” Thompson said.

“Our guys are picking things up quickly, but they have a lot to work on,” Thompson said.

Interest has been high, as both the boys and girls teams have large rosters.

“We’re very happy with the numbers. It’s a great way to start both programs and hopefully they’ll continue to grow, “ Sacco said.
