Pavilion vandalized

Damage done to Kiwanis Pavilion at Hammonton Lake Park

HAMMONTON—Police are seeking the people who vandalized the Kiwanis Pavilion at Hammonton Lake Park, Hammonton Police Chief Kevin Friel said. The vandalism was reported to police at 6:47 p.m. on August 20, Friel said.

“Police were dispatched to 100 Sports Drive in reference to criminal mischief. The Hammonton Kiwanis Pavilion was vandalized,” Friel said.

During an interview with The Gazette, Friel detailed the vandalism to the pavilion and when it most likely occurred.

“It appears that between August 1 and August 20 that at some point there were numerous acts of graffiti throughout the walls and counter area of the Kiwanis Pavilion. There was profanity as well as images that were drawn on by vandals using permanent marker. The images and words were spray-painted over by citizens to obscure them from view,” Friel said.

Friel said police conduct patrols in Hammonton Lake Park, and in all the town parks, to ensure they are safe for the public.

“We do property checks with routine patrols at all of our local parks to make sure the parks are being used in the way they were intended. We ask people that if they see something that is contrary to law going on in our parks, please let us know,” Friel said.

Volunteers told The Gazette on August 23 that the pavilion had been repainted in addition to the spray painting. Anyone with any information about the vandalism should contact the Hammonton Police Department at (609) 561-4000.
