Perspective: Torrissi in Trenton

New Jersey Assemblyman (R-8) and Hammonton resident Michael Torrissi (top, left) took the oath of office on January 11 in Trenton. After the ceremony he posed for a picture with his wife Katie (next to Torrissi) and (bottom row) his father Michael, daughter Sophia and sister Carianne Torrissi. Torrissi previously served on town council. (Courtesy Photo)

First and foremost, I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone in Hammonton for participating in our democracy, regardless of how you voted. It always impresses me how serious the residents of this town take their civic duty to get out and vote.

I’m extremely honored to have come out on top this past election and to deliver Hammonton the state representation it deserves. We’re not the stepchild of the 8th Legislative District, and we haven’t been for a while. Hammonton has an outsized importance in the 8th, and you all deserve representation to match that importance.

Alongside Senator Jean Stanfield and Assemblyman Brandon Umba, we will always have the needs of the town residents in the front of our minds and give you a place to go if you ever need anything. Senator Stanfield has been a wonderful ambassador to Hammonton since getting elected to the legislature, two years ago. I can’t count the amount of times she’s spent the entire day at our town events, and she’s always provided a direct line to the town council to help us with our state needs. I know my running mate, Brandon Umba will bring the same passion to the job that Jean Stanfield does.

We currently have a dedicated staff working out of our district office on Main Street in Lumberton, but are planning to move in a couple of months. One of my campaign goals was to bring the 8th District Office closer to Hammonton, and I’m proud to say that we are finalizing a move to Marlton, on the border of Medford.

You can call or visit our office anytime from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday at (609) 667-7360 or email me at asmtorrissi@njleg.org. Don’t be bashful. I’m here to serve you. Tell me about what you want to see changed in the state, what you want me to work on, the issues you’re having with a state department or just something you’re passionate about.

Once a month, I’ll be giving all of you a bird’s eye view of what I’m seeing in Trenton and what I’m working on to make the state a better place for all of us. That’s what you can expect out of this column. It will be an honest, first-person perspective through my eyes.

You can expect anything from an in-depth, technical conversation on legislation I’m pushing to bring financial help to farmers or a more open-ended conversation on the importance of getting back on a track to normalcy in the Covid-era.
