Virginia A. Black

Virginia A. Black (nee Scoleri), 96, of Stuart, Fla. and formerly of Hammonton, N.J. passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at the Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital in Stuart, Fla.

Virginia was born to Carmello and Maria Carmela (nee Lacopo) Scoleri in Hammonton, N.J.

Virginia held a variety of careers such as a seamstress, hairdresser and a nurse for William B. Kessler Memorial Hospital in Hammonton. She loved shopping of any kind, especially for blouses, shoes and handbags. She had a knack for creating crafts of many varieties and enjoyed teaching others how to turn grocery bags and pantyhose into lovely gifts. Other pastimes were crocheting and hours playing her favorite card game, Spite & Malice, with close friends and family members. Virginia was a dancer at heart and always enjoyed a slow dance with a gentleman.

Most memorable of all was Virginia’s observational sense of humor. Many of her stories began innocently enough, only to take a turn that would etch that story and its punch line into your memory forever. No time with Virginia was immune to the effortless humor she brought to any moment. Eventually her infectious smile would begin to show as one of her stories would reach that moment where she was not only genuinely amused with her memories, but realized you were about to laugh along with her.

She is predeceased by her parents; her husband, Basil J. Black; and all eight of her siblings, Josephine, Victor, Tudy, Pete, Katie, Tony, Joe and Edith.

Virginia is survived by her two daughters, Grace Dipper and her husband George of Elkton, Md. and Vicki Neander and her husband Jerry of Chester, Va. Loving grandmother to Danny Dipper, Aaron Wise and his wife Sil, Brandon Wise and his wife Kailin. Comedic great-grandmother to Justin, Emily, Brandon, Zachary and Madelyn Wise, and a proud great-great grandmother to James and Grayson Wise.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Virginia’s services on Saturday, May 7, 2022, beginning with her visitation at Marinella Funeral Home 102 N. Third St. Hammonton, NJ 08037 from noon to 1 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery 124 S. First Rd. Hammonton, NJ 08037.
